Varanasi Sightseeing Tour with Sarnath

Situated on the banks of the famous Ganges River, Varanasi is a holy city, and a place considered the spiritual nerve-center of north India. It’s among the oldest existing and holiest cities in the world with a shade of religious ethos and some history thrown to it. Considered scared to Hindus with mentions in millennial old books, it’s where people come from all parts of the world to celebrate two of the most important events in life – birth and death.

The mention of Varanasi without temples is like detailing a desert without the sands. The landscape of the city is dotted with popular and ancient temples dedicated to different gods and goddess. Two of the most important temples in Varanasi are, Kashi Vishanath Lord Shiva Temple and Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple. Temples are present at virtually every nook and corner of the city with some other popular ones including Bharat Mata Mandir, Durga Temple, Tulsi Manas Temple and New Kashi Vishwanath Temple.

Most of these temples in Varanasi are centuries old and they attract devotees from all parts of the world. During festival times and in pious month, these festivals buzz with sea of people partaking in religious ceremonies and prayers. Apart from the scared temples, you must also visit the ghats on the ban of the Ganges, particularly the Dasaswamedh Ghat which is located close to Vishwanath Temple. Some of other popular ghats include Manikarnika Ghat, Harischandra Ghat and Assi Ghat.

1. Kashi Vishwanath Temple
On the western bank of the Ganga in Varanasi is Kashi Vishwanath Temple. For Hindus and Lord Shiva, this temple is one of the most sacred temples. The Temple's Jyotirlinga is also one of India's most revered Jyotirlingas.

Since it is one of Varanasi's most famous temple, the temple is home to approximately 3,000 people each day. In almost every holy Hindi scripture, the Kashi Vishwanath Temple was glorified, making it an extremely integral part of your visits to Varanasi.

2. Sankat Mochan Temple
In the early 1900s Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple was constructed by Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya. The shrine lies by the Assi River. Each year a special show called Shobha Yatra is organized from the Durga Kund to the Sankat Mochan church. The Hanuman Jayanti festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm each year.

The famous laddoo from the temple, their taste is really extraordinary, will be served for Prasad! Beware of the notorious apes who are always ready to steal their belongings while you are at the Sankat Mochan Temple. Don't tease them. Don't tease them. When left to their own devices, they are completely harmless.

3. Durga Mata Temple
The Monkey Temple, also called Durga Mata Temple, is located just 2 km from Banaras Hindu University due to the presence of hundreds of monkeys at the temple. This magnificent Durga temple is located on the famous Durga Kund.

4. Bharat Mata Temple
In the Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth, Varanasi, is situated the Bharat Mata Temple. This unique temple was constructed by Babu Shiv Prasad Gupt and is dedicated to Bharat Mata. The temple was opened in 1936 and houses a glorious marble idol of Bharat Mata.

5. Banaras Hindu University
The Banaras Hindu University of Madan Mohan Malviya was established in 1916. Besides the fact that Banaras Hindu University is a leading higher education institute in India, it is also visited by hundreds of tourists every day. The temple of New Vishwanath is dedicated to Lord Shiva and looks picturesque on the banks of the Ganga River. It seems that the temple deity himself provides the entire campus with an air of peace and calm.

6. Ganga Aarti
Something which we can't afford to miss at all costs is the evening Aarti or Ganga Aarti, held in Varanasi's ghats every evening, as part of the tour of local Varanasi. Dashashwamedh Ghat is the most spectacular of them. The aarti begins on winter evenings at exactly 6 p.m. and on summer evenings at 7 p.m.

From the Ghat steps, the rooftops, the shops, the boats that fill the river, you will see Aarti. The pooja is led by seven pandits, and the ritual includes rhythmic singing in the praises of the river Ganges of mantras, hymns and prayers.

7. Dhamek Stupa
Dhamek Stupa Sarnath lies at Sarnath in Uttar-Pradesh in India, one of the most well-known and venerated Buddhist structures in the world. One of the most sacred locations in India for Buddhist pilgrimages, Sarnath is known for being the place where Lord Buddha made his first sermon after the illumination on Bodhgaya. The spot of the Buddha preaching his first message is Dhamek Stupa Sarnath. Built in 249 B.C.E. by the great Mauryan King Ashoka, Dhamek Stupa is located in Sarnath's Deer Park.

8. Chaukhandi Stupa
Chaukhandi Stupa is the first monument to be seen while entering Sarnath. Chaukhandi has a significant history as an important Buddhist stupa in Sarnath. Chaukhandi Sarnath is widely thought to have originally been built in the Gupta period from the 4th to the 6th centuries as a temple with terraces. Govardhan later – The son of a local king, by building an octagonal Mughal tour around the square building of the stupa, modified stupa to its current shape. The tower was built to commemorate Humayun's visit - the mighty Mughal ruler.
