White buildings modified by the existence of the red roof are a shimmering view from far away and Likir Monastery is the point of study here. The Monastery of Likir in Likir, which dated to the 11th century, is one of Ladakh'S older largest and best monasteries. Likir's charm is reflected in its large statue of the Buddha 75 feet in height.

History

Klu-kchyil gompa or its original name was known in the monastery of Likir. Naga is surrounded by the Likir word.  Two serpents, Nanda and Taksako, were supposed to guard the monastery. Likir Gompa is home to many ancient and most visited monasteries of its origin and formation. Tsongkhapa was the founder of this monastery in the 15th century, but Likir Gompa was kept in custody by the yellow Hat Sect or the Gelugpa Sect.

Structure of the Monastery

The Likir monastery is flanked by wall paintings, stone relics, mural and arts, and is a perfect display of Buddhist legacy, principles and culture. There is also a school within the monastery. The Institute of Buddhist Studies is managed by the Central Institute of Buddhist Studies and also a library open for the public. There are two assembly houses in the Gompa, a central courtyard with 6 rows of lama seats and a head lama throne. There is a room at Gonkhang dedicated to the monastery's protected divinities.

Best Time to Visit : July to September

Time Required : 2 - 3 hours (It is open on all days from 09:00 am to 01:00 pm and from 02:00 pm to 06:00 pm)

Highlights : The annual event Dosmochey is held in the monastery from the 27th to 29th day of 12th month of Tibetan Calendar.

Location : The monastery is located 6 km north of Leh-Srinagar highway before the village of Saspol. From Leh, the distance is 62 km to the west of the town.
