The world-renowned Buddhist pilgrimage and tourist spot of Bodhgaya in Bihar has many monuments and attractions and The Great Buddha Statue is one of them. This giant stature is 25 m (82 feet) in height and has Lord Buddha in meditation pose. The statue depicts the Lord in seated on a lotus in dhyana mudra. Placed in open air, the statue is there since 18th November 1989 and it took seven years to complete it.

Some 12,000 masons worked on the building of The Great Buddha Statue and its craftsmanship is proof of the work and effort put. Made up of a fusion of sandstone blocks and red granite, the statue is considered perhaps among the largest ones in India. Unveiled by the 14th Dalai Lama, the Japanese-style statue towers above a pleasant garden and 10 smaller sculptures of Buddha’s disciples encircle it.

Every year, a huge number of Buddhist followers and tourists come here and visit The Great Buddha Statue. The statue is next to Mahabodhi Temple and being a part of the World Heritage Site makes it even more popular. What’s more, the statue is partially hollow and is supposedly containing some 20,000 bronze Buddhas. It’s a symbol of peace you should definitely visit it in your trip to Bodhgaya.
