Khardung La is the world's highest motorway at 5,359 metres. A sign that welcomes visitors when they arrive acknowledges it with joy. The achievement that one passes by the highest motorway is interesting in itself.

Khardung La is nearly 40 km from Leh a high-altitude mountain pass and is the gateway of the Shyok & Nubra Valleys. The use of it to carry supply to the Siachen glacier, has an immense strategic significance for India.

The Khardung La Pass, Ladakh's biggest tourist site, is maintained by the Border Roads Organization and is supported by all types of vehicles from two wheels to trucks.

Things to remember while visiting Khardung La

Due to the high altitude, Altitude Mountain Sickness or AMS, will most likely affect you, due to the extremely low oxygen and air pressures. Therefore, it is best not to spend over 20 minutes.

Before you travel to Khardung La Pass you should stay in Leh for 3-4 days. To avoid infection, you must take medicines such as diamox and plenty of water. Woollen clothing and sunglasses are a must.
